Today’s Birthday March 28: US actress Dianne Wiest (1948-).
An accomplished actor on stage, screen, and television, Dianne Wiest achieved much of her success working with Woody Allen.
Born on March 28, 1948 in Kansas City, Wiest harboured ambitions to be a ballerina before making a switch to acting in college.
Wiest dropped out of her theatre studies at the University of Maryland after three years and spent much of the 1970s travelling and playing with off-Broadway theatre companies.
Her most notable theatre performance came as Desdemona in the Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Othello in 1982.
This followed Wiest’s film debut in It’s My Turn (1980).
But it wasn’t until 1985 that she found widespread fame for her role as a prostitute in Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose Of Cairo.
This began a string of roles for Wiest in Allen’s films, including her Oscar-winning role in Hannah And Her Sisters (1986).
In 1989, she starred in Ron Howard’s Parenthood, for which she earned a second Oscar nomination.
Wiest won plenty of fans for her role as Peg Boggs in the cult hit Edward Scissorhands (1990), before again working with Allen in Bullets Over Broadway (1994).
This performance gave Wiest her second Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
Wiest has continued to act in mostly supporting film roles in more recent times.
She was a constant in the Drama TV series In Treatment from 2008 to 2009.
Her next film appearance will be alongside Al Pacino and Kyra Sedgwick in The Humbling.
